MLB Power Rankings - Look for title No.27 for the Yankees Oct 8th 2009

MLB playoff betting is underway, which means these power rankings will come to an end, but here’s a look at how these eight teams stack up heading into the postseason.

1. New York Yankees - All they need is consistent pitching outside of C.C. Sabathia, because you know the Yankees are going to drive in runs. If A.J. Burnett lives up to his giant contract, the Yankees will win the World Series.

2. Philadelphia Phillies – The defending champions from Philadelphia may have the deepest rotation of any playoff team. Chase Utley will have to wake up from a brutal September, though.

3. St. Louis Cardinals – In Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, the Cards may have the best one-two pitching punch right now. They’ll have to keep up their incredible hitting after the second half.

4. Boston Red Sox – Too many questions about the Red Sox. After Jon Lester and Josh Beckett, can sportsbook player backing the Red Sox really trust Dice-K and rookie Clay Buchholz?

5. Los Angeles Angels – If they’re going to break their miserable playoff jinx against the Red Sox, we’re betting management thinks is the best time to do it. They’ve lost three times to the Red Sox in the ALDS three times since 2004.

6. Los Angeles Dodgers – Their pitching seems too young to go deep into the playoffs, and for the love of all that is holy, what happened to Chad Billingsley? Wasn’t he a Cy Young candidate in the first half of the season? He’s fallen off harder than Jim Carrey and the second season of “The Wire”.

7. Colorado Rockies – This whole “Rocktober” thing is out of hand. Yes, the made the World Series two years ago, and then fell on their face. We’re not sold on the Rockies, who were a bit shaky down the stretch.

8. Minnesota Twins – The Twins’ 12-inning win over Detroit in the one-game playoff was an instant classic, but they may have used all of their bullets just to get to this point. And they get the Yankees? What a terrible reward. Stay away from Minnesota in your MLB picks.
